Houseplant for a Low-Light Spot

Most houseplants you put in a dark corner slowly die: they stretch toward the window, lose leaves, and give up after six months. The Stephania Erecta is one of the varieties that actually needs indirect light and cannot tolerate direct sunlight—a north-facing room, a windowsill behind a sheer curtain, or a desk a few meters from the window are just right. The plant grows from a round, woody tuber that stores water, so you only need to water it once every one to two weeks. Forgetting to water it is no disaster; overwatering it is.

Why It Works in a Dark Spot

• Prefers indirect light: It doesn't need direct sunlight, so it's suitable for a north-facing room, a hallway, or a desk farther from the window.
• Water once every 1-2 weeks: The tuber stores water, so the plant can easily survive a busy week or a weekend away.
• Sculptural tuber: Even without many leaves, the round caudex remains a decorative object on a windowsill or side table.

A workspace with no daylight directly on the desk is fine, as long as some daylight enters the room. Only water when the top layer of soil feels dry, and never leave water standing in the saucer.
